UMD graduate student Yanshuo Sun wins FAA research award

UMD CEE doctoral candidate, Mr. Yanshuo Sun, has been selected as a recipient of a $10,000 research stipend as part of the Graduate Research Award Program on Public-Sector Aviation Issues for the academic year 2015-2016. This program is sponsored by the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP)/Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine and funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. His proposed study entitled “Coordinated Airport Facility Development under Uncertainty” is part of his dissertation research, advised by Prof. Paul Schonfeld.

In the proposed study, Mr. Sun seeks to design flexible airport development plans that consider the close interactions among various airport components in uncertain environments. The early results of his research have been published in Transportation Research Part B by Mr. Sun and his advisor. Throughout this award program, two mentors assigned by the ACRP panel of experts will collaborate with Mr. Sun on drafting the research paper, which will be presented at the TRB annual meeting and potentially published in Transportation Research Record.

Mr. Sun is a 4th year PhD student, currently funded by the National Transportation Center @ Maryland through a freight reliability project. He received his B.S. from Southwest Jiaotong University in 2010 and M.S. from Tongji University in 2012. At present, he is in the final stages of preparing his dissertation.
